Gaios, the village capital of Paxos
and centre of the island's life, spreads out along quiet streets
that radiate from the main square.
There, sipping drinks beneath the
cafe umbrellas, visitors sit and watch the caiques and yachts
bobbing at their moorings a few feet away.
Beyond, just across the water, lies
Aghios Nikolaos island dominated by its old Venetian castle. Gaios
offers a variety of restaurants, tavernas and well-stocked shops of
all kinds. It is from here, too, that the express boats leave for
Anti-Paxos.
